Sant Mateu (Sant Mateu del Maestrat) was in the 14th century the capital of the Templar Maestrazgo and one of the most important political and religious centres of the western Mediterranean. Today it is a town of just over 2,000 inhabitants that preserves intact its medieval historic quarter, Gothic architecture and surrounding ancient olive groves.

Sant Mateu (in Valencian, Sant Mateu del Maestrat) is a municipality in the Bajo Maestrazgo comarca, Castellón province, Valencian Community. With approximately 2,100 inhabitants, it is the former capital of the Maestrazgo and contains an important historic-artistic ensemble with 14th-century Gothic monuments, including the Arciprestal Church of Sant Mateu, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. It is at 380 metres altitude, 30 minutes from Vinaròs and 40 minutes from Peñíscola.
